Highlight on the church of our Lady Khaldeh

1782- The Shihabist Emir Quaadan The Great took over the region of Choueifat & Khaldeh & governed them.

1793- People of Mount Lebanon rebelled against Emir Bashir The Great protesting against the extortion of high taxation . The rebellion was led by Emir Quaadan & his cousin Emir Haidar who were then forced to flee from Abey – their headquarters - to Jbeil , to hide from Emir Bashir.

At that time many worshippers joined him & as time passed urged him to consacrate that place for Holy Ste Mary with the help of Father Hanna & the support of Emir Quaadan .Meanwhile Emir Quaadan’s wife was suffering from an acute chronic disease which put her on the verge of agony. Weary & feebled by her illness and strongly believing in the Miraculous Healing Powers of Holy Ste Mary, she urged the Reverend Father Hanna to seek the intercession of Holy Ste Mary to relieve her suffering & assuage her pain . Father Hanna accepted her request on condition that if Holy Ste Mary responds to his prayers , the Princess will then ask Emir Quaadan to grant him the land of the grotto in order for him to build a church there bearing the name of “Our Lady of Khaldeh “.So he showed her a small picture of Holy Ste Mary similar to a bigger one exhibited in the grotto depicting a copy of the famous Italian painter Raphael’s : Virgin Mary on the Chair,(Madonna della Seggiola ),the actual Our Lady of Khaldeh Church Symbol .The Emir’s wife acquiesced. The very next morning , Holy Ste Mary responded to the prayers & the Emir’s wife was utterly healed …She immediately honoured her promise with the full consent of Emir Quaadan.


1795- Reverend Father Hanna Nassif Bou Kanaan concretized his religious commitment and founded a modest Chapel commemorating the holiness of “ Our Lady of Khaldeh “ consecrating it as a Family Endowment of the Kanaans of Abey.Eversince the legacy of the Kanaan Family as custodian of this Holy Place has been enshrined…
